The Quod under construction

Quod Conservation Works

Heritage conservation works are being undertaken on the former Aboriginal prison, the Quod, to stabilise the building and where possible reflect its original prison appearance.

Overview

As part of Stage Two of the Wadjemup Project, conservation works are being undertaken on the Quod building. As the most recognisable symbol of Wadjemup's prison history, these works will address deterioration issues and in doing so represent the Quod closer to its original appearance to properly acknowledge its use as an Aboriginal prison.

Wadjemup’s prison era saw the incarceration of almost 4,000 Aboriginal men and boys. Conserving the Quod is an important step in recognising and acknowledging the island’s history and the ongoing impacts still felt today of the island’s prison history on Aboriginal communities across Western Australia.

The Wadjemup Project aims to formally acknowledge and reconcile the island’s Aboriginal prison history through truth-telling, ceremonies to facilitate healing, and memorialisation of the Quod and the Wadjemup Aboriginal Burial Ground.

Frequently asked questions

Palassis Architects is the Lead Heritage Consultant for the Quod Conservation Works with Colgan Industries undertaking the works.
Non-original concrete floors, acrylic paints, external verandahs and other redundant services are being removed. Walls are being repaired, and white lime wash is being applied.
‘Quod’ is an English slang term, originating in the eighteenth century, meaning a prison.
The Quod was initially converted into a State Hostel for accommodation, but it was also used as an internment camp for German and Austrian officers during World War I in 1914 and 1915. It was later further adapted for use as commercial accommodation forming part of the Rottnest Island Lodge. These adaptations obscured the prison origins and the impact of the prison history on the Aboriginal community.
In 2018, the Quod was released from a commercial lease and management of the building was returned to Rottnest Island Authority.
