An update on the works taking place on the island and how they may impact your visit.

Works and service improvements are conducted periodically across Wadjemup / Rottnest Island

A range of projects are also currently underway to refresh and revitalise the island facilities. These works aim to enhance the visitor experience and to preserve the island long term.

Refurbishment of Stay Rottnest accommodation units in Longreach and Fay's Bay commenced in April 2025.

Accommodation upgrades will include refurbished bathrooms, new kitchens, new flooring and painting, and upgrades to courtyards and balconies.

During the works, there will be changes to access in and around Longreach Bay and Fay's Bay. The Longreach Bay public ablutions block on Zephyr Road will remain open and will be accessible via Longreach Bay beach or the bike path between Longreach Bay and The Basin.

There is no access to Fay's Bay or the Longreach tennis courts.

There is no access to Geordie Bay through Longreach Bay or Fay's Bay. Visitors will need to use Geordie Bay Road, and boat owners will need to land in Geordie Bay to visit the General Store, Geordie's Cafe & Art Gallery, Kuld Creamery, and the Laundromat.

Traffic management and signage is in place to assist visitors.

Removal and replacement of 32 timber verandah posts at Kingstown Barracks due to wood rot, State Heritage approval has been obtained.

The Stay Rottnest accommodation will be closed for the renovation period.

Timber furniture and decking in the shopping mall precinct will undergo cleaning and oiling works from 31 July to 30 August, weather permitting. 

Access to the furniture will be fenced off in stages to minimise disruption while these works are underway. All businesses will remain open, though some may have entry via a single door only.

Installation of cabling as part of electrical infrastructure upgrades. Increased truck movement and noise along Parker Point Road, with safety barriers in place.

Electrical infrastructure is being upgraded in Longreach, Geordie Bay and the settlement along Digby Drive.

There will be additional traffic movements in the area with some associated noise.

Roof repair and resealing works on the historic Pilot Boathouse will be undertaken, followed by internal timber oiling works.

The Boathouse will stay open during roof works, which will be done by hand during reasonable daytime hours with no heavy machinery.

Geotechnical investigations will be carried out on the Rottnest Island Golf Course and Mt Herschel.

Golf course holes 6, 7, and 8 will be closed during the works. All other areas of the golf course will remain open.

Road edge repairs will take place along Bedford Avenue. Workers and equipment may impact the visual appeal of the Segway tours. Minor traffic delays are expected for safety with minimal noise disruption.

Repairs are being carried out to Berth 5, with the berth closed during the works period. The last 5 m of the Main Jetty will be fenced off.

Preparation works will be carried out across the island’s road network ahead of road reseasling. Works include pot hole repairs, removal of encroaching vegetation and other minor works.

Affected roads: Aitken Way, Noongar Loop, Army Jetty Road, Bovell Way, Brand Way, Defence Road, Digby Drive, Kura Bidi, Geordie Bay Road, Karlak Boodjar Road, Wadjemup Road, Little Parakeet Road, Ngaliwanga Banan, Oliver Hill Road, Parakeet Road, Parker Point Road, Parker Point Loop & Djidar Bidi.

All roads will remain open during the works, with some minor delays possible. Traffic management will be in place.

Shelters in the Settlement Mall and Heritage Common will be sanded and repainted.

Fencing will be installed around work areas but all areas will remain open. There may be some noise due to dust extraction equipment.

As part of the Main Jetty refurbishment project, the jetty pavement will be reconstructed and sealed with asphalt.

The reconstruction of the pavement will be undertaken in eight different phases to ensure visitor access to the jetty will be maintained for most of the time.

Upgrades to the Longreach Borefield saline water extraction will occur to meet projected growth for the island's future water needs. Works include a new bore pump and installation of a new electrical switch room. The path between The Basin and Longreach Bay will be closed at various times, with signage in place to assist visitors.

Wadjemup was used as an Aboriginal prison and forced labour camp between 1838 and 1931. State records indicate that 4,000 Aboriginal men and boys from Western Australia were imprisoned on the island, including in the Quod. Heritage conservation works will conserve the building. Aboriginal monitors will be on site throughout the works.

Conservation works are being undertaken to ensure the stabilisation of the buildings ahead of decisions on future use.

The Quod will be fenced off during works and there will be some noise during the works.

The Lodge Wadjemup is developing new worker accommodation to support its staff and operations and to enhance service delivery.

Earthworks are in progress until the end of September 2025.

There will be an increase in traffic movements, including trucks, along Parker Point Road. Machinery noise will be audible in the South Thomson are during work hours.
