Wadjemup Project Steering Group Wins 2025 NAIDOC Award
The Wadjemup Project Steering Group (WPSG) was awarded the Caring for Country and Culture Award at the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony held in Boorloo / Perth on Saturday 5 July 2025.
The Wadjemup Project Steering Group (WPSG) was awarded the Caring for Country and Culture Award at the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony held in Boorloo / Perth on Saturday 5 July 2025.
The award was presented to the advisory committee for Stage Two of the Wadjemup Project and includes members Farley Garlett, Neville Collard, Herbert Bropho, Glenys Yarran, Sandra Harben, and Karen Jacobs.
The Wadjemup Project is a state-wide Aboriginal-led project facilitated by Rottnest Island Authority to reconcile the history of Aboriginal people’s imprisonment on Wadjemup between 1838 and 1931.
The WPSG was elected by Whadjuk Elders to leads Stage one and Two which involved statewide consultation for the delivery of the truth-telling and ceremony strategies; the Quod conservation and future use strategy; and memorialisation of the Wadjemup Aboriginal Burial Ground.
The national NAIDOC Week Awards honour the remarkable contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals who drive positive change within their communities and across the nation. This year marks 50 years since NAIDOC Week began.
