New members sought for Wadjemup Aboriginal Reference Group
Established in 2017, the WARG provides advice to RIA on reconciliation matters and the management of non-legislative cultural heritage on the island.
Since its inception, the WARG has overseen the closure of the former Aboriginal prison, the Quod, for use as accommodation, the refurbishment and renaming of the Wadjemup Museum, and the development and delivery of the Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan.
Wadjemup has deep cultural significance for Aboriginal people across Western Australia and Rottnest Island Authority is committed to the shared journey towards understanding and healing.
The WARG consists of six Aboriginal members from different language groups across the State who play a critical role in this journey by providing guidance on decisions relating to the respect and engagement of cultural heritage on the island.
Membership is open to Western Australian Aboriginal people who have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- promoting reconciliation;
- supporting Aboriginal employment and cultural safety;
- applying current museum and collection management practices;
- developing Aboriginal economic development opportunities;
- operating Aboriginal cultural tourism ventures;
- natural resource management;
- implementing research programs;
- or developing educational and training opportunities for Aboriginal youth.
The EOI is open until 26 May 2026. The term of appointment is until 1 January 2028. More information about the process can be found at ria.wa.gov.au/wargeoi
