Rottnest recycling soap in new sustainability initiative
Since October 2022, soap bars previously discarded by guests have been turned into new bars and sent to communities in Australia and abroad.
Soap Aid saves used soap from landfill by re-purposing the soap into new 100 gram bars of soap, preventing landfill and reducing the extraction of raw materials.
The repurposed soap is sent to communities with and accompanied by a hygiene and behaviour change education program.
Repurposed bars of soap are estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 40 per cent compared to using new soap.
Since the program has been running, 50 kgs of soap has been re-purposed into 500 bars of soap, which Soap Aid calculates will save the lives of 18 children and provide a 12-month supply of soap for 10 families.
RIA become a Soap Aid Hotel to Hands Champion, partnering with Programmed Facilities Management (PFM) to deliver this program. Soap Aid Hotel to Hands Program is a circular economy initiative creating long-lasting health and environmental benefits.
