The Basin is a popular destination on Rottnest Island and these improvements to visitor amenity better accommodate the increasing levels of visitation.
Overview
The redevelopment of The Basin on Rottnest Island was a project initiated to meet the demands of the area's popularity and to preserve its environmental integrity. As outlined in the Rottnest Island Management Plan 2020-24, the upgrades improved visitor infrastructure, addressing issues such as erosion and congestion, while enhancing the overall experience. The project included new pathways and landscaping, as well as upgrades to shelters, toilets, beach showers, lighting and signage.

Reduced congestion with new bike pathway around the rear of the site
New landscaping including decking, grassed areas and shrubbery
New shade shelters, seating, barbeque facilities and improved lighting

Improving a National Tourism Icon
On 9 April 2019, the Federal Tourism Minister announced an investment of $17.2 million for vital infrastructure upgrades to help enhance the visitor experience, embrace cultural heritage, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Rottnest Island. Upgrades at The Basin were undertaken as part of this funding.
