The West End
The West End project provides enhanced facilities and heritage interpretation, servicing visitors with a new bus stop precinct, and connecting to the Wadjemup Bidi walking trails.
Overview
In response to growing visitor numbers, this project transformed the West End and opened the western side of the island to visitors through various enriching experiences and an improved transport hub.
The project included the development of interpretive heritage and environmental exhibits, a bus stop precinct to facilitate access to the area's attractions, and connection to Wadjemup Bidi trails inviting exploration of the area. Additionally, the installation of iconic artwork and interpretive elements provides an opportunity to share the stories of the Whadjuk Noongar people, keeping with its significance as a place for reflection.
This project was a key initiative under the Rottnest Island Management Plan 2020-24.

Improving a National Tourism Icon
On 9 April 2019, the Federal Tourism Minister announced an investment of $17.2 million for vital infrastructure upgrades to help enhance the visitor experience, embrace cultural heritage, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Rottnest Island. The West End upgrades were undertaken as part of this funding.
Key dates
The construction program was completed in November 2023 with major vegetation planting to follow.
