Rottnest Island’s museum has undergone $1 million refurbishment and been renamed the Wadjemup Museum.
Located in the Old Mill and Hay Store in the Settlement, the museum’s new name reflects the island’s Aboriginal heritage and honours the Whadjuk Noongar Traditional Owners.
The new museum was opened yesterday (December 22) by WA Senator Matt O’Sullivan, representing the Federal Minister for Tourism, and WA Minister for Tourism, the Hon Paul Papalia MLA CSC.
The building invites visitors to explore the unique and diverse history of the island through themes exploring cultural connections, early exploration, Aboriginal incarceration, volunteering, tourism and holidays.
The history of the building has been recognised with the re-instatement of the remaining portions of the original millstone dating back to 1857.
The museum project was funded through the Commonwealth Government's National Tourism Icons program - part of a $17.2 million funding commitment for Rottnest Island infrastructure upgrades to enhance the experience of visitors and ensure the long-term sustainability of the island as a destination.
